Huazhong Agricultural University

Located in Wuhan, Huazhong Agricultural University (HZAU) is a national key university of "Project 211" directly under the Ministry of Education. HZAU enjoys a history of more than 110 years, which can trace back to Hubei Farming School founded in 1898 by Zhang Zhidong, governor of Hubei and Hunan provinces. The university was entitled National Civilized Unit in 2008.

Covering an area of 495 hectares, the campus contains well-spaced teaching blocks and lab buildings and is surrounded on three sides by clear lakes and backed by green hills, making it an ideal place for teaching and research. HZAU consists of 17 colleges and departments, with more than 2700 faculty and staff and over 24000 students. Featuring life sciences and giving prominence to agricultural disciplines, HZAU has achieved coordinated development of multi-disciplines of agriculture, science, engineering, humanities, law, economics, management, etc.

There are 1449 faculty members, of whom 296 are professors, 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 4 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 academicians of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, 1 foreign associate of U.S. National Academy of Sciences, 5 “1000 Plan” chair professors,10 chair professors of “Yangtze River Scholars Program” of the Ministry of Education, 5 chief scientists of National Project 973, 2 chairmen of international academic organizations, 6 members of Discipline Evaluation Panel of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, 14 winners of National Outstanding Youth Science Foundation Award, 4 National Prominent Teachers, 7 National-level Teaching Teams and 31 national, ministerial and provincial level science and technology innovation teams.

HZAU boasts two national key laboratories, one national and local joint engineering laboratory, 4 national R&D centers, 15 provincial and ministerial key laboratories. Significant achievement has been obtained in the fields of modern biotechnology, hybrid rapeseeds, green super rice, lean swine, animal vaccines, high-quality citrus and etc, and one of which has been selected for the Top Ten Scientific and Technological Progress Awards at Chinese universities in 2011. HZAU is the only higher education institution which has won the title of Advanced Unit in the implementation of the national program "863".

In recent years, the annual initial employment rate of college graduates of HZAU has been maintained around 95%, taking the leading position among the national colleges and universities. HZAU has produced notable alumni, including academicians of the two Academies, senior government officials, well-known entrepreneurs and the role models of college students like Xu Benyu, who received Touching China Awards in 1999.

HZAU has established exchange and cooperation relationships with over 150 institutions of 40 countries and regions such as the United States, Canada, Australian, South Korea, Britain and France, built up joint training programs with many foreign universities. More than 500 foreign experts visit HZAU every year.
